Fire-Resistant Fence Materials Compared: Aluminum vs. Wrought Iron vs. Masonry

If you need to replace your fence for Zone 0 compliance, the next question is: with what?

Several materials meet California’s Zone 0 requirements: aluminum, wrought iron, steel, masonry, and fire-retardant treated wood. Vinyl has a conditional exception depending on how it’s positioned relative to the house.

Here’s how the main options stack up for San Diego homeowners, based on what we see and install every week.

Aluminum Privacy Fencing

Best for: Most Zone 0 projects. Full privacy, partial replacements, and pool code compliance.

Aluminum is what we install for the majority of Zone 0 fence replacements. The product we use is a full privacy aluminum panel, not the ornamental picket-style that most people picture when they hear “aluminum fence.” These are solid panels that give you the same privacy as a wood fence while being completely non-combustible.

It doesn’t rust. It holds up to San Diego’s coastal salt air and inland heat without corroding. It meets the 26-gauge minimum thickness required by Zone 0 guidelines. And it’s lighter than steel or wrought iron, which makes it easier to install on the slopes and hillsides that are common in San Diego fire zones.

Pros: Non-combustible, full privacy, rust-proof, lightweight, meets pool code, low maintenance, 30+ year lifespan, works with most HOA guidelines

Cons: Higher per-foot cost than wrought iron for longer runs

Typical cost (San Diego): $70 to $250 per linear foot installed, with a $2,000 project minimum. Standard panels start at the lower end. High-end privacy configurations run $200+/ft. A 5-foot partial replacement without a gate runs $2,000 to $2,500. Gate sections start at $3,000.

Wrought Iron / Steel Fencing

Best for: Homeowners who want a traditional look, maximum security, and a fence that lasts generations

What the fence industry calls “wrought iron” is actually pre-galvanized steel with a powder-coated finish. True wrought iron hasn’t been commercially produced in decades. The modern product gives you the same classic look, the same strength, and better corrosion resistance than the original.

JJ’s Fence installs these panels across San Diego. They’re non-combustible, fully Zone 0 compliant, and built to last 40+ years. The black powder-coated finish looks clean and holds up well in most of San Diego’s climate, though coastal properties may need occasional touch-ups where salt air wears on the coating.

The tradeoff compared to aluminum: wrought iron doesn’t come in a privacy configuration. The panels have an open, ornamental design. If you need a solid barrier between you and the neighbors, aluminum privacy fencing is the better fit. If security and curb appeal matter more than privacy, wrought iron is a strong choice.

Pros: Strongest residential fencing option, non-combustible, premium aesthetic, 40+ year lifespan, excellent security, lower per-foot cost than aluminum

Cons: No privacy (open design), heavier (harder to install on slopes), requires periodic rust treatment in coastal areas

Typical cost (San Diego): $60 to $85 per linear foot installed.

Masonry (Block, Stone, Stucco)

Best for: Property boundaries, retaining walls, and homeowners who want total privacy with no maintenance

Masonry walls are non-combustible and provide complete privacy and noise reduction. They’re common in San Diego, especially as retaining walls on graded lots.

The catch is that masonry requires a different kind of contractor (mason, not fence installer), costs significantly more, and takes longer to build. Permits are also more involved.

For most Zone 0 fence replacements, masonry is more than you need. But if you’re already building a retaining wall or replacing a property boundary, it’s worth considering.

Pros: Non-combustible, complete privacy, noise reduction, extremely durable, no maintenance

Cons: Most expensive option, requires masonry contractor, longer build time, permit-intensive

Typical cost (San Diego): $50 to $120+ per linear foot installed (varies widely with height, finish, and site conditions).

Fire-Retardant Treated Wood (FRTW)

Best for: Homeowners who want a wood look but need to meet Zone 0

FRTW is standard lumber that’s been pressure-treated with fire-retardant chemicals to meet ASTM E84 or equivalent testing standards. It’s an approved Zone 0 material, but it’s a specialty product. Most fence contractors, including us, don’t stock it as a standard offering.

JJ’s Fence can source FRTW on request. For most homeowners, aluminum ends up being simpler and more cost-effective while still giving you full privacy. But if keeping a wood look is important to you, FRTW is an option worth discussing.

Pros: Wood aesthetic, meets Zone 0 requirements, available in standard fence styles

Cons: Specialty product (limited availability), costs more than standard wood, may need reapplication of treatment over time, not as widely tested in San Diego’s climate

Typical cost (San Diego): $30 to $55 per linear foot installed (varies with sourcing).

What About Vinyl?

Vinyl doesn’t fit neatly into a “yes” or “no” category. Per the City of San Diego’s Zone 0 Guidelines, vinyl can remain if the fence is perpendicular to the building wall and at least 5 feet from any door or window. Vinyl running parallel to the wall or near an opening must be replaced.

If your vinyl fence qualifies for the exception, you may not need to do anything. If it doesn’t, aluminum privacy fencing is usually the most straightforward replacement since you keep the same solid look.

Our Recommendation

For most San Diego homeowners doing Zone 0 compliance work, aluminum privacy fencing is the best all-around choice. You get a solid, private fence that’s non-combustible in any configuration, won’t rust in coastal air, and lasts 30+ years with virtually no maintenance. It looks like a modern privacy fence, not the ornamental picket-style most people associate with aluminum.

If you want a traditional look with maximum security and don’t need privacy, wrought iron is a solid choice. If you want to keep a wood aesthetic, ask us about FRTW.

FAQ

Q: Does aluminum fencing come in privacy styles? A: Yes. The aluminum fencing JJ’s Fence Company installs in San Diego is a full privacy panel. It gives you the same solid look as a wood fence while being completely non-combustible and Zone 0 compliant.

Q: What’s the most affordable fire-resistant fence material per foot? A: FRTW and wrought iron both come in under $85 per foot. Aluminum starts around $70/ft for standard configurations (with a $2,000 project minimum). For most Zone 0 partial replacements, the total comes to $2,000 to $2,500 without a gate.

Q: Does aluminum rust in coastal San Diego? A: No. Aluminum doesn’t corrode, even in salt air. That’s one of the main reasons JJ’s Fence Company in San Diego recommends it over other metals for coastal properties.

Q: Can I use wood if it’s fire-treated? A: Yes. Fire-retardant treated wood (FRTW) meeting ASTM E84 standards is approved for Zone 0. It’s a specialty product that JJ’s Fence can source on request.

Q: Who actually enforces Zone 0 compliance? A: In practice, your homeowners insurance company. The City of San Diego has stated it will enforce, but the scale of the city makes that impractical. Your insurer is the one tying coverage and premiums to defensible space compliance.
