When homeowners find out their fence doesn’t meet Zone 0 requirements, the first assumption is usually the worst-case scenario: rip out the entire fence and start over.
For most properties, that’s not what needs to happen.
Zone 0 only covers the first 5 feet from the structure. If your fence extends beyond that, only the section within the buffer needs to change. The rest can stay exactly where it is.

How Partial Replacement Works
We remove the section of your fence that falls within the 5-foot Zone 0 buffer and replace it with aluminum. Then we tie the new section into the existing fence so the transition is clean and the fence line stays continuous.
The aluminum we install is a full privacy panel, not the ornamental picket-style most people picture. You get the same solid look as a wood fence, just non-combustible and built to last.
For a typical property, this means replacing 5 to 10 linear feet of fence rather than 50, 100, or 200 feet. The time difference is a few hours versus a few days. The cost difference is significant.
When Partial Replacement Makes Sense
Partial replacement is the right call when:
The fence runs along a side yard or property line and only the first section near the house falls within Zone 0. This is the most common scenario.
The fence connects to the garage or an attached structure and then extends outward toward the property line. We replace the section closest to the structure and leave the rest.
The home has multiple fence lines, but only one or two come within 5 feet of the house. We address just those lines.
You need the most cost-effective path to compliance. A $2,000 to $2,500 partial replacement (without a gate) beats a $6,000+ full replacement when only 5 feet of fence is actually in the zone.
When Full Replacement Makes More Sense
Partial replacement isn’t always the best option. Full replacement of a fence line (not necessarily the entire property) makes more sense when:
The fence runs parallel to the house along a narrow side yard, with the entire run within or very close to the 5-foot buffer. Replacing 25 feet is more practical than splicing at 5 feet.
The existing fence is old and would need replacing soon anyway. If the wood is rotting or the fence is leaning, it doesn’t make sense to tie new aluminum into a fence that’s at end-of-life.
You want the entire fence line to match. Some homeowners prefer a consistent look rather than a transition from aluminum to wood mid-run.
What the Transition Looks Like
The most common question about partial replacement: “Will it look weird where the two materials meet?”
It depends on the materials, but the answer is usually no. Aluminum to wood is the most common transition we do. We use a shared post or a clean termination point where the materials change. The aluminum section is typically a different color and style than the wood, so it reads as an intentional design choice rather than a patch job.

Check Your Vinyl First
If your fence is vinyl, you might not need a replacement at all. Per the City of San Diego’s Zone 0 Guidelines (Rev. 4/22/2026), existing vinyl can stay within Zone 0 if the fence runs parallel to the structure, sits at least 4 feet from the structure, is maintained free of debris, and has no vegetation between the fence and the house.
Before scheduling any work, we’ll assess whether your vinyl fence qualifies for this exception. If it does, there’s nothing to replace.
If it doesn’t, or if the vinyl extends perpendicular from the structure (where the first 5 feet must be non-combustible regardless of material), a partial replacement with aluminum is still the most cost-effective path.
One caveat: your insurance company may have stricter requirements than the city code and may not allow vinyl within Zone 0 at all. Check with your agent.
